Understanding UCAS Offers

8 min read Article Updated 2026-03-13

Types of UCAS offers and contextual admissions

When you submit your application through UCAS, universities review your personal statement, predicted grades, and references. They respond with one of four official decisions. Read these decisions carefully to dictate your next steps in the application cycle.

A conditional offer means the university wants you, provided you meet specific academic requirements. These conditions usually depend on your final A-level, T-level, or BTEC results in August. A university might ask for specific grades, such as AAB. Alternatively, they might ask for a total number of UCAS Tariff points. For example, an offer of 120 Tariff points equals BBB at A-level or DDM at BTEC Extended Diploma. Check your offer conditions for subject-specific requirements. An engineering course often demands an A in A-level Mathematics, regardless of your other grades.

An unconditional offer guarantees your university place immediately. You do not need to achieve specific grades in your upcoming exams to secure your spot. Accept an unconditional offer as your firm choice and your place is locked in.

An unsuccessful decision means the university rejected your application. This happens if your predicted grades fall short of their entry requirements, or if your personal statement lacks relevance to the course. Highly competitive courses reject thousands of qualified applicants simply because they lack available spaces. A withdrawn decision means either you or the university cancelled the application. Universities automatically withdraw offers if you fail to respond to messages, miss interview dates, or ignore portfolio submission deadlines.

Universities use contextual offers to level the playing field for applicants from disadvantaged backgrounds. A contextual offer is a conditional offer with lower grade requirements than the standard entry criteria. A university might lower their standard AAA requirement to ABB for an eligible student. You do not need to apply separately for a contextual offer. Universities check your home postcode to see if you live in an area with low progression to higher education. They also check if you spent time in local authority care, or if you receive free school meals. Check the preparing for university section for more details on widening participation schemes.

Making and replying to your firm and insurance choices

You must choose two universities once all your offers arrive. You cannot hold onto all five offers until results day. Your firm choice is your preferred university. This is where you want to study most. Meet the conditions of this firm offer on results day and you will definitely study there.

Your insurance choice acts as a backup option. You only attend your insurance university if you miss the grades for your firm choice.

Top Tip

Always choose an insurance offer with lower grade requirements than your firm choice.

If your firm choice requires AAB, your insurance choice should require BBB or lower. Making your insurance choice the exact same grades as your firm choice defeats the purpose of a backup. If you miss AAB for your firm, you will also miss AAB for your insurance. You must decline all other offers once you select your firm and insurance universities.

Student reviewing UCAS offers on a laptop

Book an offer-holder day before making your final decision. These events differ from standard open days because universities tailor them for applicants who already hold an offer. Speak to department heads, tour the specific accommodation blocks reserved for first-year students, and ask current undergraduates about their experiences.

UCAS sets strict deadlines for you to reply to your offers. The exact date depends entirely on when you receive your final university decision. Wait until every university has made a decision before you submit your firm and insurance choices. Check your UCAS Hub account to find your personal deadline.

If you received all your university decisions by 13 May 2026, you must reply by 3 June 2026. If your final decision arrives by 17 July 2026, your reply deadline is 22 July 2026. Set a phone reminder a week before your deadline. Do not leave this decision until the final day. Website crashes or internet dropouts will not excuse a missed deadline.

Comparing unconditional and conditional university offers

Unconditional offers remove the stress of results day. You know exactly where you will live and study in September. This certainty allows you to book accommodation early and start planning your student finances without worrying about missing your grades.

Accepting an unconditional offer carries significant risks. Many students lose motivation for their final exams once they secure an unconditional place. They stop revising and their final grades drop drastically.

Your final school grades stay on your CV forever. Graduate employers often look at your A-level or BTEC results when you apply for jobs. Highly competitive graduate schemes demand strong A-level grades alongside a good university degree. Dropping your grades because you held an unconditional offer will harm your future graduate careers prospects.

Offer TypeGrade RequirementsSecurityImpact on Insurance Choice
ConditionalMust meet specific gradesDepends on results dayCan hold an insurance choice
UnconditionalNone100% guaranteedCannot hold an insurance choice
ContextualLower than standard gradesDepends on results dayCan hold an insurance choice

If you accept an unconditional offer as your firm choice, you cannot select an insurance choice. You commit entirely to that single university. Think carefully before accepting an unconditional offer from a university that was not your original first choice. Never accept an offer just because it is unconditional.

Understanding UCAS Extra and Clearing options

Sometimes the main application cycle does not go to plan. You might receive five rejections. You might receive offers for courses you no longer want to study. UCAS provides alternative routes to secure a university place.

UCAS Extra opened on 26 February 2026. This system lets you add one extra university choice to your application. Use Extra if you used all five original choices and hold no offers. You can also use it if you actively decline every offer you received. Apply to one course at a time through Extra. If that university rejects you, add another one. This process runs until 1 July 2026. Using UCAS Extra costs nothing if you already paid the full application fee for multiple choices.

If you hold no offers after 1 July 2026, you automatically enter UCAS Clearing. Clearing matches unplaced applicants with university courses that still have vacant spots. Clearing officially opens on 2 July 2026.

Use the university applications hub to research alternative courses before Clearing opens. Make a shortlist of backup universities and write down their Clearing hotline numbers. Being prepared gives you a massive advantage when the phone lines open. Call universities directly on results day to secure a verbal offer before adding them as a Clearing choice on your UCAS Hub.

How deferring a UCAS offer works

You can delay starting your course by one full academic year. This is called deferring your entry. Defer your entry to travel the world, complete an internship, or gain relevant work experience. Many students defer to work full-time and save money for their first year of study.

Ask the university directly if they allow deferred entry for your specific course. Do this before you apply by checking the box on your UCAS application. You can also ask after you receive an offer by emailing the university admissions team.

Not all universities accept deferral requests. Highly competitive courses like medicine, veterinary science, or dentistry rarely allow deferrals because the demand for places is too high. If the university agrees to your deferral, your offer conditions remain exactly the same. You must still meet the required grades in August 2026 to secure your 2027 place. You cannot retake exams during your gap year to meet the conditions of a deferred offer.

If you defer your place, you must delay your student finance application. Apply for your tuition fee and maintenance loans in the spring of 2027, not 2026.

Managing your student finance application

Receiving your UCAS offers triggers the next major step in your preparation. Apply for student finance immediately. Do not wait until your exam results arrive in August to apply for your tuition fee and maintenance loans.

Apply for student finance as soon as the application service opens in spring. Use your firm choice university on the finance application. If you end up going to your insurance choice or a Clearing university, log into your student finance account and change the university details later.

Good to Know

Applying late for student finance means your money will not arrive in time for the start of your course in September.

Your maintenance loan amount depends on your household income. Discuss this with your parents or guardians early. They must submit their tax details to support your application. Calculate your exact loan entitlement to build an accurate budget for your first term. Ensure your bank account is ready to receive these large deposits.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I change my firm university choice on UCAS?

You can change your firm and insurance choices within 14 days of making your original reply. You must contact UCAS directly by phone to request this change. After 14 days, you cannot change your replies and must ask the university to release you into Clearing if you change your mind.

What happens if I reject all my UCAS offers?

Rejecting all your offers allows you to use UCAS Extra if you do so before 1 July 2026. You can apply to one new course at a time through Extra. If you reject your offers after 1 July, you will automatically enter Clearing to find a new course.

Do universities know my firm and insurance choices?

Universities cannot see where else you applied or whether you made them your firm or insurance choice. They only see this information after you receive your exam results in August. This ensures universities make fair decisions based entirely on your academic performance.

How long do universities take to give offers?

Universities process applications at different speeds. Some reply within days, while others wait until after the January deadline to assess all candidates together. If you applied by 14 January 2026, universities must send you a decision by 13 May 2026.
